X-ray Pulsations from the Central Source in Puppis A
نویسنده
چکیده
There are several supernova remnants which contain unresolved X-ray sources close to their centers, presumably radio-quiet neutron stars. To prove that these objects are indeed neutron stars, to understand the origin of their X-ray radiation, and to explain why they are radio-quiet, one should know their periods and period derivatives. We searched for pulsations of the X-ray flux from the radio-quiet neutron star candidate RX J0822–4300 near the center of the Puppis A supernova remnant observed with the ROSAT PSPC and HRI. A standard timing analysis of the separate PSPC and HRI data sets does not allow one to detect the periodicity unequivocally. However, a thorough analysis of the two observations separated by 4.56 yr enabled us to find a statistically significant period P ' 75.3 ms and its derivative Ṗ ' 1.49 × 10−13 s s−1. The corresponding characteristic parameters of the neutron star, age τ = P/(2Ṗ ) = 8.0 kyr, magnetic field B = 3.4 × 1012 G, and rotational energy loss Ė = 1.4 × 1037 erg s−1, are typical for young radio pulsars. Since the X-ray radiation has a thermal-like spectrum, its pulsations may be due to a nonuniform temperature distribution over the neutron star surface caused by anisotropy of the heat conduction in the strongly magnetized crust. Subject headings: pulsars: individual (RX J0822–4300) – stars: neutron – supernovae: individual (Puppis A) – X-rays: stars

X - Ray Observations of RX J 0822 - 4300 and Puppis - A
Based on observations with the X-ray observatories Chandra and XMM-Newton we present results from a detailed spectro-imaging and timing analysis of the central compact X-ray source RX J0822-4300 in the supernova remnant Puppis−A. The superior angular resolution of Chandra allows for the first time to pinpoint the point source nature of this object down to 0.59 ± 0.01 arcsec (FWHM) and to determ...
متن کاملNondetection of a Pulsar-powered Nebula in Puppis a and the Implications for the Nature of the Radio-quiet Neutron Star Rx J082224300
We report on a deep radio search for a pulsar wind nebula associated with the radio-quiet neutron star RX J082224300 in the supernova remnant Puppis A. The well-determined properties of Puppis A allow us to constrain the size of any nebula to less than 300; however, we find no evidence for such a source on any spatial scale up to 309. These nondetections result in an upper limit on the radio lu...
متن کاملDiscovery of a 112 Ms X-ray Pulsar in Puppis A: Further Evidence of Neutron Stars Weakly Magnetized at Birth
We report the discovery of 112-ms X-ray pulsations from RX J0822−4300, the compact central object (CCO) in the supernova remnant Puppis A, in two archival Newton X-Ray Multi-Mirror Mission observations taken in 2001. The sinusoidal light curve has a pulsed fraction of 11% with an abrupt 180 change in phase at 1.2 keV. The observed phase shift and modulation are likely the result of emission fro...
متن کاملDeep optical observations of the central X - ray source in the Puppis A supernova remnant ⋆ ( Research Note )
Context. X-ray observations reveiled a group of radio-silent isolated neutron stars (INSs) at the centre of young supernova remnants (SNRs), dubbed central compact objects or CCOs, with properties different from those of classical rotation-powered pulsars. In at least three cases, evidence points towards CCOs being low-magnetized INSs, born with slow rotation periods, and possibly accreting fro...
متن کاملar X iv : a st ro - p h / 05 07 14 5 v 1 6 J ul 2 00 5 X - ray Pulsations in the Supersoft X - ray Binary CAL 83
Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray data reveal that the supersoft X-ray binary CAL 83 exhibits 38.4 minute pulsations at some epochs. These X-ray variations are similar to those found in some novae and are likely to be caused by nonradial pulsations the white dwarf. This is the first detection of pulsations in a persistent supersoft source.
